ADHD/ADD is a common issue these days. Around 10% of children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD and around 4% of adults receive a diagnosis after childhood. Countless more slip under the radar and there are likely many high functioning individuals that never receive an official diagnosis but have troubles either with focus or impulse control, or both.

ADHD may not even be a disorder in the true sense, but a leftover evolutionary advantage dating back to when all humans were nomadic hunter gatherers. There are studies conducted with modern hunter gatherer groups, and the individuals with ADHD tended to be in better health and higher social status.

ADHD people tend to move around more, scanning the environment and always looking for more to do, which would make a lot of sense in an outdoor nomadic environment. However, those same studies show that ADHD individuals in nearby groups that had left the hunter gatherer lifestyle and began more modern lifestyles were more likely to struggle with the new, more sedentary schedule.

Chances are, if you're reading this from your laptop or smart phone, you're not living the lifestyle of a nomadic hunter gatherer. So what can we do to help modernize our brains?
